What the Sweet Sue name covers

Sweet Sue began as a name for canned chicken dishes from Athens, Alabama. The 1967 registration lists barbecued chicken, chicken parts with rice, chicken dumplings, chicken stew and boned chicken. The 1976 registration is longer and reads like a Southern supper menu: whole chicken, chicken a la king, beef and dumplings, ham and dumplings, Brunswick stew.

The Sweet Sue range sold today is narrower. Chicken & Dumplings is still there, in two can sizes. Boned chicken lives on as chunk white chicken breast in cans and pouches and as boneless chicken in broth. Beef broth joined chicken broth in the record in 2007.

The brand has changed hands since Alabama. The registrations name Sweet Sue Kitchens first, then Saramar of Chicago, then Bumble Bee Foods of San Diego. The line on the label has stayed: From the kitchens of Sweet Sue.

What a Sweet Sue label carries

Sweet Sue labels, can by can

Every can and pouch prints the line From the kitchens of Sweet Sue above the name, in gold on a blue plaque. The chicken cans also carry the round inspection mark of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The back of the 3 oz pouch names a distributor in San Diego, California, and prints a recipe for chicken fold-overs. Each can prints its Nutrition Facts panel, its ingredient list and its Contains line.

The front of the label states the net weight in ounces and in grams, and the end of the can carries a stamped production code. Those two lines identify exactly which can a shopper holds.
